Guided and self-organised trips in the Municipality of Jesenice

We would like to recommend several guided and self-organised trips in the Municipality of Jesenice. They are interesting and include all important natural and cultural sights. Everybody, groups or individuals, who would like to discover the town of Jesenice and places in the Karavanke is invited. Spring, summer and autumn months are the best time to discover the secluded places. Trips which include visits to daffodil sites are feasible when the flowers are in blossom. Trips are guided by local guides. Trips should be booked at least five days in advance. Itineraries can be adapted to individual groups. You are kindly invited to get to know a town whose history has been characterised by mining and ironmaking. In Jesenice you will see Stara Sava, an old foundry and residential area, which used to be the central part of the town. The settlement is dominated by Bucelleni Ruard Manor, nowadays housing Upper Sava Valley Musem Jesenice, showing the history of the place. Kasarna with the reconstruction of a worker's flat shows the lifestyle of ironmaking families in the beginning of the 20th century. After that we head for Murova, the oldest part of Jesenice. After a walk through history you will taste some of the dishes that used to be popular in Jesenice, then we will go to Pelton wheel, which was the biggest in the world at the time of its erection - its diameter is ten metres and it weighs 90 tons.
In three Gorenjska power stations you will be able to see the historical development of utilising the power of water. The tour starts at the water-storage reservoir at Moste Hydroelectric Power Station and then you will be invited to visit the biggest Gorenjska power station and observe its operation. Right next to it is Hydroelectric Power Station Završnica, the oldest power station in Carniola and as such it has a status of technical heritage monument. Then we will go to see an even older hydroelectric power station - Javorniški Rovt. After an informative visit we will have lunch in a former Baron Žiga Zois' administrative building and then you will be able to walk in Zois' Park. Our first stop is a former iron foundry settlement Stara Sava with palaeontology, mining and ironmaking collections in Bucelleni Ruard Manor. In the settlement there is Church of St. Mary's Assumption and a big residential house for workers – Kasarna, housing an ethnological collection. After the visit to the protected museum area we are going to go to the village of Planina pod Golico which is especially lively in May when the fields below Golica are full of daffodils, called ključavnice by local people. Everybody knows the most popular folk music Golica, which found its inspiration right here. We are going to walk to Sava caves, which used to be the richest iron ore deposit far and wide. After the visit to Savske jame, we will have lunch at Farm tourism Betel. This will be followed by the last walk to the centre of the village to see the Church…
Visit the town which was famous for its heavy industry and today it wants to present itself as a town, joining old with new, knowledge with tradition. We will take you to Stara Sava, an old iron foundry and residential area, which used to be the central part of the town. In a big residential building, built in the 18th century, we will watch a presentation about ironmaking history in Jesenice. Then we will walk across the oldest bridge to the sports hall, home of the current national champions in ice-hockey. After that we head for a green oasis in the middle of Jesenice - Memorial Park in Plavž, dedicated to soldiers, killed in the First World War. In the limestone world nature often plays with the stone, sculpturing magnificent and mysterious shapes which people often associate with legends. An example is Poljanska Baba, a young lady from the castle who, according to the legend, petrified because of her cruelty. If you like nature and walking, you are kindly invited to visit her and other sights of Mežakla, a mountain plateau at the edge of Triglav National Park. You can start in the village of Kočna, situated between Bled and Jesenice. In half an hour you will reach the petrified lady, about 8-metre high rock. On the way to the lady you will pass Jamnik abri, a Mesolithic site, bearing witness to prehistoric settlements in these areas. The path leads to the edge of Mežakla near Planski vrh where you will be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the Sava valley. A little further on you will…
Let's go back to Tertiary period, 45 to 50 million years ago, when the area of the present day Jesenice was on the coast of the Pannonian Sea. The tour starts in Gornjesavski muzej where we will see a rich collection of fossils from that period, found on the slopes of the Karavanke that we plan to visit. Our next stop will be Dom na Pristavi, a former Baron Žiga Zois' administrative building. After refreshment a guide will take us to a palaenthologic site in the valley of Lepena (one hour and a half of walking). In situ you will be able to see fossils of snails, shells, sea lilies and plants and the remains of ancient roasting furnaces as steel was produced here already in prehistorical times. On the way back we will walk through Zois' Park to Pristava where we will have lunch.
